Images of a boy in panic as he was dying lit up every nerve in Stone and he dunked Angelino one more time. After another count of three, he pulled the soaking head up and ran his hand around Angelino’s waist checking for weapons. “You should thank me because I’m going to let you live.” Stone’s chest heaved to draw in breaths. “Those other guys wouldn’t have been quite so accommodating.”
Stone let go and Angelino fell limp in the boat. Stone’s punch had landed on the man’s nose and blood was oozing from his nostrils and his lips. Sirens wailed and the wheels of squad cars and ambulances rattled the deck above.
“Man, all I wanted to do was ask you some questions and now look at you,” said Stone. The day’s pursuit and end of the chase was catching up with him. Weariness flooded his arms and legs. “Guess what?”
